AI Overview

Compiled by AI from community sources — may be incomplete or inaccurate; verify before relying on it.

A tall, herbivorous Xi'an livestock beast (UEE name "Shoone") farmed for its fine wool — a lore/flavor creature that exists today only through its wool products, not as a huntable in-game animal.

Appearance

Described in lore as a tall, herbivorous beast prized for its fine wool. No concept art or in-game model is currently published; descriptions are textual only. The animal is essentially a Xi'an analogue to a sheep or alpaca — a domesticated wool-bearing grazer rather than a wild predator.

Behavior & temperament

Passive and domesticated. The Ma'xy.un is a herd/shepherded livestock animal that the Xi'an have farmed since antiquity, not an aggressive or pack predator. A defining behavioral trait in lore is the constant, pervasive "crunching" chewing noise it makes throughout the day while grazing — loud enough that the early Xi'an who first herded them named the animal after that sound.

Where to find

Not present as a spawnable, huntable creature in the current game build — there is no known planet/moon/biome where players can encounter one. In lore it is a farmed Xi'an animal. Its wool is sourced from farms on Saisei (Centauri III) in the Xi'an Empire, where the casualwear brand MuyMuy is headquartered and obtains most of its supply; this is the closest thing to a canonical "location" for the species.

Diet

Herbivore / grazer. Its entire identity in lore is built around its eating: the Xi'an name literally encodes "chew / crunch / masticate / grind." It is, etymologically, a "cruncher."

Loot & drops

No in-game creature drops exist, since the animal is not huntable. Its lore output is wool, which appears in the game economy as finished MuyMuy garments rather than as a raw harvestable. Notably, the Ambrus Suit (manufacturer MuyMuy) is crafted from natural brocade silk and worsted ma'xy.un wool; it sells for roughly 2,650 aUEC on average and is currently obtainable mainly via lootboxes rather than standard shops.

Lore & discovery

The species was created through Cloud Imperium's community Animal Naming Contest (results published 2017), in which players proposed Xi'an-language names for fauna of the Xi'an Empire. The winning Ma'xy.un entry came from player Benjamin Hopp, who built the name from two Xi'an elements: ma'a, the elemental/compound marker for "animal," and xyun, a coined "tai" meaning to chew, crunch, masticate or grind. CIG's lore team selected it because it correctly followed Xi'an word-combination order and cleverly evoked the animal's constant chewing noise; they applied only minor tweaks to the final form. The UEE/Human common name is "Shoone." Even most Xi'an don't consciously register the literal "cruncher" meaning baked into the name.

Trivia

- Sibling creatures named in the same contest: ma'tok.yāi ("Tokyai"), a tree-gliding apex predator native to Xi (Rihlah V) whose name means roughly "animal that creates genuine fear," and the ngii, a semi-aquatic domesticated mammal that is the Xi'an's most popular pet. - The whole creature is effectively a piece of worldbuilding to justify a real in-game fashion item: the wool feeds the MuyMuy clothing brand on Saisei.
